The first menstrual period:Most girls get their first period between the ages of 10 and 14, with the average age being 12.5 years. |
500 menstrual periods in a lifetime:A woman has approximately 500 menstrual periods in her lifetime. Between the ages of 45 and 55, her cycle becomes increasingly irregular. At the end of menopause, menstruation ceases, and reproduction is no longer possible. |
The cycle:The menstrual cycle, or female cycle, is the period between the first day of menstruation and the last day before the next period. For most women, the entire cycle lasts 28 days, but cycle lengths of 25–35 days are also perfectly normal. |
Ovulation:Ovulation usually occurs 11 to 16 days before the next menstrual period, depending on the length of the cycle. Although women have two ovaries, usually only one egg matures at a time. Which ovary produces the egg is determined randomly. |

Menstruation:Menstrual bleeding lasts an average of 3 to 7 days. For most women, menstruation begins with heavier bleeding, which becomes progressively lighter over the following days. Initially, the blood is usually bright red and then gradually becomes darker. Menstrual fluid consists of shed uterine lining, the unfertilized egg, and blood. |
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS):A relatively large number of women experience various symptoms a few days before their period, which are collectively known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Breast tenderness, mood changes (e.g., sadness or anger), abdominal swelling, bloating, intense sensations of cold or heat, and abdominal and back pain can sometimes severely limit your daily life. |
Endometriosis:In Switzerland, approximately 190,000 women, or about one in ten, suffer from endometriosis. Endometriosis is the growth of uterine lining (endometrium) outside the uterus. This results in the formation of so-called islands of endometrial lining, which can be located anywhere in the abdominal cavity. They are often found on the ovaries, peritoneum, bladder, or between the vagina and bowel. Accordingly, the symptoms typically occur around menstruation and are therefore often misinterpreted. Typical symptoms of endometriosis include severe lower abdominal pain, which begins several days before menstruation, persistent lower abdominal pain, back pain, pain during intercourse, lack of energy and motivation, and difficulty urinating (bladder) or difficulty defecating (bowel). |
Sex during menstruation:There's nothing wrong with having sex during your period if both partners feel comfortable with it. The risk of becoming pregnant from unprotected sex during menstruation is lower—but it's possible. |
